SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT

AbstractThis study investigates how to make the most of eclecticism in language, symptomatic of modern literature in James Joyce’s Ulysses. The overall aim of this research is to advance an understanding of the impact of a change in the function of language from major to minor utilization, from representation to simulacra, from metaphors to metamorphosis, and from extensive to intensive usage in relation to Stephen Dedalus’s artistic aspirations insofar as it opens up new possibilities of life for this aspiring writer. In order to demonstrate how the text problematizes a conventional ‘image of thought’ grounded on the ‘plane of transcendence’, a pragmatic and rhizomatic approach was demanded within the framework of Deleuzian criticism throughout Stephen’s aesthetic journey. The findings underline that due to the deterritorialization of language, rhizomatic tendencies in Stephen’s thoughts and his productive connection to the virtual side of reality, his subjectivity and desire could be released from the shackle of psychoanalytic dictations and in doing so, a ‘schizo’ state of his psyche could be revealed. Moreover, the transformative power of his art renders possible an inhuman possibility of life through the ‘affect-event’ which activates ‘becoming’ with the world as ‘pure intensities’ in lieu of ‘being’. The main conclusion to be drawn from this work is that there is a possibility of an unfettered flow of desire for Stephen in a mode of impersonal love on condition that language and thought would break away with the so-called roots.
