Recent research has shown that listening comprehension can be described and taught. Now, a great many listening activities try to test this skill, rather than to teach it. This condition has resulted in low proficient listeners. This problem might be rooted in inadequate knowledge of the teachers as well as the learners of appropriate strategies in listening comprehension. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of teaching these listening strategies on listening comprehension performance. Using a pretest listening comprehension test, two homogeneous groups of university EFL learners were chosen. Each group consisted of eighteen students, 18 to 26 years of age. One of the groups was chosen as the control group, and the other as the experimental group. A series of cognitive and metacognitive listening strategies along with some listening tasks were taught to the students of the experimental group during fifteen sessions of instruction. Then, a post-test listening test was administered to the learners. A t-test was run through to determine the effect of instruction on the experimental group. The results revealed that listening strategy instruction had a significant effect on the listening comprehension performance of the participants in the experimental group. Findings of this study offer pedagogical implications which may provide insights for teachers, material designers, curriculum developers, and teacher-training.
