Optical computing is the field that exploits various optical phenomena and components towards the realization of different special/general purpose computer systems. A systematic approach towards the design of these architectures is needed. This requires the development of sufficiently broad methodologies, standards for components and devices, and design tools/systems. This thesis advocates a methodology for the development of optical architectures together with the design and implementation of a system (usd{\cal O}usdptiusd{\cal CAD}usd) for facilitating the design activity. This thesis is divided into five logical parts. The first part describes the concepts and principles involved in the design of the complete system. The second part contains several optical architectures designed and described using usd{\cal O}usdptiusd{\cal CAD}.usd The third part contains annotated Mathematica notebooks that are exclusive to usd{\cal O}usdptiusd{\cal CAD}.usd These address issues such as component modeling, component libraries, simulator and different kinds of analyses. A large collection of tools/utilities is presented in Part IV as Mathematica notebooks. Part V is a reference manual for the whole system.
