SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT

In most developing economies, women have a strong task to accomplishin order to cope with the complex business environment. In the recent time women have renewed theirefforts playing a more active role particularly in small and medium enterprises. This research, thus, examined the entrepreneurship orientation dimensions (EODS) and Performance of Female Owned Businesses in Kwara State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to; examine the effect of proactiveness on customer retention;investigate the relationship between innovativenessandnew product development; assess the influence of risk taking on sales growthand determine the effects of competitive aggressivenesson profitability of the female-owned businesses in Kwara State. The study adopted a triangulation approach through the standardized interview and structured questionnaire. The population comprises of 3658 registered female fashion designers from six selected Local Government Areas in Kwara State. Three hundred and forty six (346) copies of questionnaire were administeredusing simple random sampling, while 10 respondents were purposefully selected for the interview which were analyzed using inferential and thematic analysis respectively. The study foundthat the standard multiple regression coefficient with R2 value of 0,273, 0.179, 0.340 and a Pearson correlation of 0.430 indicated a significant effect of entrepreneurship orientation dimensions on the performance of female owned businesses. The thematic analysis also shows that innovativeness, proactiveness, risk taking and competitive aggressiveness of the female fashion designers have a significant impact on customer retention/satisfaction, new product development, sales growth and profitability. The study concluded that thefemale fashion designers should be innovative, to increase their individual performance. If they are pro-active to market changes they could maintain their performance by retaining their positions in the market. If they continue to be competitively aggressive they would always have the advantage of competitiveness. Risk taking is vital for the growth and performance of female owned businesses in the State. When the female fashion designers have to invest in innovation they are exposed to risk which seems to be beneficial for their business survival and growth. Therefore, the study recommended that fashion business proactiveness could influence new customer retention/satisfaction. The female fashion designers needed to focus on customer needs and always anticipate future wants and needs in the industry. Fashion innovativeness would increase new product development, hence female fashion designers needed to actively seek innovative product and ideas. Thefemale fashion designers should be rewarded for new ideas/styles that are trending. Taking risks in business can increases sales growth, female fashion designers needed to be cautious in their line of action, even if some opportunities might be lost doing that. Female fashion designers needed to respond quickly to competitors' actions which may threaten their businesses. This can be done by tracking the business performance of their key competitors.
